How to Reset a Forgotten Windows Password?

Wednesday, 14. September 2011

Refer to how to reset a forgotten Windows login password, I know that you can find various solutions by searching on Google. Here I just intend to show my personal experience in recovering my lost Windows password.

Some days ago I changed my Windows password simply because I used it for a long time. But unfortunately I cannot remember it a few hours later. It’s a Windows 7computer. For this problem, I searched on Microsoft website and it shows that I can reset the forgotten Windows password either by a password reset disk or admin password. I was so happy to learn that there exists a solution to fixing my problem.

But another problem comes out. I don’t know how to get the password reset disk as I’m a computer idiot and never create a password reset disk for my user account, What’s worse, the user account I forgot password for is my only administrator password. The only accessible account is a stand user account. Aside from the two methods, another suggestion is to reinstall Windows. Without hesitation, this is my last choice as there too many important data on my computer.

For this, I had to consult my friend Joe, who is good at computer and advices me to have a try of Ophcrack. Ophcrack is a completely free Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables which can help lost users retrieve forgotten Windows password in Windows 7. But it isn’t what I want as it seems too complicated for me. And then I find a commercial tool called as Windows Password Unlocker, which is easier and more convenient than the free one.

Though this tool costs me some money but it deserves what I have spent. By using this Windows password recovery tool, I can instantly reset my forgotten password to blank in an easy and safe manner. All my computer data is kept intact after Windows password recovery with this tool. The following are the overall procedures.
1. Download and install Windows Password Unlocker.

2. Create a bootable password reset disk with CD/DVD or USB flash drive.

3. Start your computer form the bootable disk.

4. Reset forgotten password to blank.

5. Log into your computer without password.

How to access your Windows 7/Vista/XP automatically?

Thursday, 8. September 2011

Have you ever felt tired of entering the password whenever you are trying to log on to your computer automatically? If your computer is in a secure location and you’re the only one using it, you can set up auto login which save you the time and hassle of entering your password each time you start up. Here’s how to automatically login for Windows 7/Vista/XP.

1. Press Windows +R to bring up the Run box, enter “control userpasswords2” in the box and click OK button for Windows 7/Vista. (On Windows XP, go to Start >> Run >> enter “control userpasswords2” >> click OK) The classic User Account window will open.

2. Uncheck the box next to “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” and then click OK.

3. The “Automatically Log On” dialog box will prompt you to specify the username and password for the account for auto login. Once you’ve done this, click OK, and then OK again to complete the process.

4. To undo this process, go to the User Account window and then re-check the option for requiring a user name and password.

Tips:
1. It’s definitely not a good idea to set up auto login on a laptop, since it’s more easily vulnerable to loss or theft.

2. If you have more than one user account on the computer, the auto login feature can be more of a hassle for other people because they’ll have to log you off and log on to their accounts each time.

3. If you want to enable auto login just because it’s easy for you to forgot the password, you can create a Windows password reset disk after setting the password to avoid the troubles. Windows 7/Vista/XP incorporates features to do that job.

Monday, 29. August 2011

Today, incidents concerning data breaches occur at high profile. As a common user, you probably know how to add a strong Windows password to keep your computer secure and create a Windows password reset disk to in case troubles caused by a lost password. However, do you know how to password protect or encrypt your external hard drive to carry around your sensitive data?

When it comes to encrypt external hard drive, you can buy a secure external hard drive that embedded hardware encryption. Its Microchips carry out automatic transparent encryption. Today’s most external hard drives come with this feature. Aside from it, you can also enjoy other additional features, like the ability to automatically overwrite the contents of the drive if the wrong password is entered more than a certain number of times. If this is not what you are looking for, well you can have a try of encryption software.

Refer to encryption software, the first thing you should do is to decide if you want to pay for a software package to provide this security on the external hard drive. There are free software downloads and pay downloads. The pay versions may offer more security but if money is tight, you may want to choose the free version.

For the freeware, it’s highly suggested to download and install TrueCrypt, a free, open-source software widely used for encryption worldwide. It works on entire hard drives, partitions, USB drives, or on stand-alone files and folders. And it supports hidden folders and files, allowing users to have plausible deniability in the case of a password getting stolen. This means that even with a password, adversaries will have a difficult time finding information. TrueCrypt support various operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

For the commercial encryption software, BitLocker developed by Microsoft may be your ideal choice. If you are a Windows 7 user, please note that BitLocker can only be enabled on Windows 7 Enterprise and Ultimate. However, once BitLocker is added to the drive, the device can be used with any version of Windows 7, and can be used in read-only mode with Windows XP and Vista.
